Muslim Voices

Join us for an afternoon of short films, stage-actor readings, and performances that reflect the voices of Muslims in Newark. Professional artists and students will perform inspiring music, powerful monologues, and display visual art that both celebrate and dramatize the long and rich history of Muslim life in New Jersey's largest city. This event is curated and directed by Dr. Zain Abdullah, Temple University Professor of Islamic Studies, and co-sponsored by the Newark 350 Celebration, the Newark Museum, and the African American & African Studies Department of Rutgers-Newark. All attendees must register at this site & not merely acknowledge their attendance on Facebook. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Parking is available for a fee at the museum and the Rutgers-Newark parking deck.

Newark Museum Celebrates Redesigned Native American Galleries

The Newark Museum is celebrating its newly redesigned and reinterpreted galleries of Native American art at its Second Sunday program. The program features lectures; performances; tours; art and science demonstrations, and workshops; music; and baked goods. All events are free with admission unless otherwise noted.

Program highlights:

Baked treats with music by the NJPAC Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens Ensemble | Noon - 2 pm

Artist Demonstration | Noon - 4 pm
Elizabeth James-Perry, an enrolled member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head –Aquinnah, demonstrates traditional techniques using natural materials.  She hand-spins milkweed and buffalo wool, uses natural dyes and creates a neck pouch decorated with wampum shell beads.

Seeing America Teen-Led Gallery Tour | 12:30 pm
Teens from the Museum’s Explorers Program lead this tour featuring art from Native Artists of North America and other galleries in Seeing America.

Native Artists of North America Gallery Tour

Enjoy a tour of Native Artists of North America, led by specially trained docents.

Family Gallery Workshops: Seeing America | 1, 2 & 3 pm
Children ages 3-5 and their caregivers are invited to explore the way lines connect, travel and intertwine with each other in gallery artworks, including the geometric shapes in Andy Warhol’s boxes and the brushstrokes in Chinese screens

Newark Museum through the Eyes of Gallery Aferro Artists:  Lisette Morel & Ayana Evans | 2 pm
The artists will tour the Museum and talk about what inspires them and the ways that works in the collection impact their own performance art.  

Navajo Sky (Planetarium Show) 
Recommended for adults and children ages 8 and up; 35 minutes
Requires separate admission fee: Adults $6; children under 12, seniors, and college students $4, Members: Adults $4, children & seniors $3 | 
2 & 4 pm
Join a Navajo family as they listen to their elders telling fascinating stories about Native American constellations that have been passed on from generation to generation.This planetarium show is presented in Navajo and English. 

Performance  | 3 pm
Native New Jersey, a cultural outreach initiative focused on the heritage of the New Jersey region's original people, helps celebrate Native Artists of North America. Drummers and dancers, most citizens of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indian Tribe, a New Jersey state recognized tribe, offer Pow Wow style and traditional Lenape style dancing.

In Conversation: American Art Curator Tricia Bloom and artist Jeffrey Gibson | 4 pm
Gibson discuss his work, his influences and inspirations, and the Newark Museum commission Come Alive! (I Feel Love), his sculptural work on view in the Native American galleries.
